First allow me to apologize for the lack of photos in this post. I spent the weekend with mates in Boston and didn’t bring my camera with me as I wasn’t planning on reviewing food. Normally when I visit, I (or we) tend to frequent familiar places, but this time we opted to visit a BBQ place in Brookline that a friend had recommended.
The place is called Roadhouse and is owned by the same people who run the Publick House, a tavern that has been a favorite for years – or had been until I started going more and more wheat free.
My friend Mat ordered the pork ribs and really enjoyed them. He felt he would certainly go back again for them. Liz ordered the “spicy” sauce buffalo wings – and ended up taking half of them home with her as she was unable to keep eating due to the spiciness of the “spicy” sauce, which left her with lips burning so badly she said they felt stung.
I ordered the beef ribs, which were good but a little over crispy for my taste. But I may have been biased by my meal coming to me with a piece of cornbread on the side after me expressly asking that no bread products be on my plate (it normally came with hushpuppies). Now, cornbread probably wouldn’t have hurt me too badly – it being a give or take on being 100% gluten free – but I had requested no bread and/or hushpuppies and expected that request to be granted. I will say that while the meal plate itself left me a little less than impressed I was very happy with my side choice of collard greens – which were tender and had just the right amount of spice added to the cooking sauce.
The good thing about the place though was that they had bottles of Green’s Gluten Free Beer available for sale – 9.00 a bottle, which is a bit pricey, but it was nice to be able to go out for BBQ and have a beer with it again.
Over all I liked the place but wasn’t spectacularly impressed. However, it you’re on a gluten free diet and looking for reasonably priced BBQ that you can have a beer with while in Boston I highly recommend checking out the Roadhouse - just make sure you chat with your waitress about the rubs and marinades before ordering.
